Matt Gerard Navarro (DLSZ 2028) shared his experience in the Sipnayan:

Not many Filipinos know the word Sipnayan, yet as a student, I hear it often. What is Sipnayan? Interestingly, Sipnayan is the native Tagalog word for Mathematics and, as a part of DLSZ’s GEM (Goals for Excellence in Math) program, I experienced this year’s online Sipnayan Contest. It is an annual contest organized by the Ateneo Mathematics Society, and it is an event that GEM students prepare for every year. The Sipnayan Online Contest took place last  October 9, and it was an exhilarating experience! It is a team contest where about 70-80 teams from schools all over the Philippines compete to be the best. They have a grade school, high school, and senior high school division. It consists of the elimination, semi-final, and final rounds. The grade school division took a whole day to finish.

DLSZ entered three teams into the contest, Team 20, consisted of Christian Malabanan, Kenzie Ong and I (Matt Navarro), Team 21, Adriel Riguera, Jacob Rodriquez, and Lorenzo Lirio (DLSZ 2029), and Team 22, Gian Ignacio, Johan Pantoni (DLSZ 2028) and Amanda Calaquian (DLSZ 2029). I remember that October 9 morning, all nine of us sent messages in our Sipnayan Google Chat room, excited and nervous for the contest to start. First, the elimination round was a two-hour individual test in Canvas then the scores of each team member were added to see the teams that would qualify for the semi-final round. It was thrilling, and I was so proud to see all three DLSZ teams pass on to the semi-finals. For the semi-finals, the platform used was Quizizz and it was a very grueling battle as the questions were difficult. In the end, luckily but sadly, only my team was able to move on to the finals. My teammates and I had to give it all we got but we were not able to answer some of the questions correctly. Although we did not make it to the podium, it was an invigorating and nerve-wracking experience, and I learned a lot of valuable lessons.

My takeaway from this experience is that it didn’t only assess my ability in Math, but also gave me practice on synergizing with others. It was challenging working with teammates and even more so because we had to do it online. It was a good thing, our GEM coach, Ms. Allaine Paran, trained us well and cultivated among all of us the ability to work together even in these unusual circumstances. Moreover, it made me realize that there are many more ways to connect with others and cope with these trying times. All in all, the Sipnayan Contest was fun and enlightening, and I hope I can join again next year.
