Zobel Parliament’s Performance in the Cambridge-Asia BP 2021

Last weekend, eight (8) debaters dispersed amongst four teams were sent to the Cambridge Asia BP 2021 Online Tournament last February 6-7, 2021. The following students made up the contingent:

  • De La Salle Zobel White: Therese A. Lachaona (DLSZ 2022) and Leonna Ricci D. Ronquillo (DLSZ 2023)
  • De La Salle Zobel Doves: Paris Canta Pineda (DLSZ 2022) and Danielle Victoria S. Garcia (DLSZ 2021)
  • De La Salle Zobel Green: Andre Rafael N. Gonzales (DLSZ 2021) and Jarom Philip F. Aguilar (DLSZ 2021)
  • De La Salle Zobel Gold: Clarisse Hanikka S. Tan (DLSZ 2023) and Yzza Keana I. Sering (DLSZ 2023)

Following a lengthy and laborious struggle of speeches and discourse, the DLSZ contingent concluded their track with an entirety of 32 points. 

The two-day long tournament comprised of:

  • A challenging four (4) rounds on the first day solely.
  • And another round on the second day.

Zobel Parliament began its run mighty with all teams winning the first round. In total, Zobel teams faced over 60 teams during the preliminaries of countries like China, Singapore, India, Vietnam, England, Korea, United States, and more. 

Debaters were exposed to distinct cultures and forms of debating; all of which were foreign to the Philippine circuit like having shorter periods in speeches. Topics covered during those were social media culture, literature within academies, US Politics, the philosophical utility of life, and social justice movements. 

Although none of Zobel’s teams were qualified to obtain a position in the competitive open break, speakers and teams placed high in the published tabulation. Including three teams within the Top 25 placed teams in the tournament, moreover half the contingent in the Top 50 speakers.

  3. 24 – De La Salle Zobel Green (8 points, 776 total speaker score, Number of firsts: 2, Number of seconds: 1, 3.54 Speaker Score Standard Deviation)
  4. 42 – De La Salle Zobel Gold (6 points, 759 total speaker score, Number of firsts: 1, Number of seconds: 1, 5.95 Speaker Score Standard Deviation)
