De La Salle Santiago Zobel takes pride in one of its alumni, Daniel Angelo M. Roque (DLSZ 2008), more popularly known as Chino, for being the lone Filipino who will travel to space onboard the two-seater XCOR Lynx Mark II spacecraft in 2015.
Chino was among those who bested over 100 astronaut hopefuls during the strenuous five-day training at Kennedy Space Center in Orlando, Florida for the Axe Apollo Space Academy (AASA) space camp. These candidates were put through various physical and mental tests, vying for 22 slots who will be launched into space.
As one of the AASA winners, Chino must have considered himself lucky since he was just a last-minute replacement for Philippine Air Force Pilot Mario Mendoza Jr. who gave up his slot to attend to his military duties.
This once in a lifetime mission to space is a collaborative effort of the men’s personal care product company AXE and the famed moonwalker Buzz Aldrin.
From your DLSZ family, we salute you for being the first Filipino in space. Animo La Salle!
