Congratulations to Tyrhone James Tabernilla (DLSZ 2026) for winning the Championship in the National Age Group Chess Grand Finals Under 16 Boys last April 3 to 10, 2023 in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte. There were 12 participants who joined the competition.
“It’s a round-robin tournament. I won on a tiebreak because I beat the opponent in the first round. Who would have thought that the first round would be the championship round? I feel happy of course!” Tabernilla shares about the experience.
Tabernilla was also awarded the National Chess Master title, a prestigious award given to Chess players who reached a 2200 rating during the tournament. He will be representing the country in the upcoming ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championship on June 17- 27, 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand.
“I will just focus on giving the best I can, at training and at the tournament,” he adds.
