On January 26-30, 2019, around three hundred young pianists from 16 countries around the world gathered at Yong Siew Toh (YST), National University of Singapore to compete in the 2019 Singapore International Piano Competition.
Two talented students of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School (DLSZ) battled it out with other contestants in their age groups and categories. Psalm Darius (Pius) C. Regis (DLSZ 2021), a pianist and bass of the DLSZ High School Chorale engaged in the Youth Class Age D and in the Beethoven Sonata Class. He skillfully played Beethoven’s Sonata in F-minor Op.2#1 and M. De Falla Danse Du Meunier. Meithzel M. Javier (DLSZ 2020), took part in the Youth Class E and confidently played Franz Schubert’s Impromptu Opus 90 No. 2, and Frederic Chopin’s Nocturne Opus 9 No. 2. Their passion for music coupled with two-month painstaking preparation paid off when they were able to get the nod of the jury.
Meithzel got a Honorable Mention Award. Pius received Honorable Mention and Third Honor Awards, respectively in Beethoven Sonata Class and in Youth Class D. He was also awarded with a trophy of Best Musicality for his excellent performance, performance integrity and musicianship.
Congratulations Pius and Meithzel. Animo La Salle!
