Sto. Domingo Qualifies in the Area Stage of PMO

Paul Isaac Sto. Domingo (DLSZ 2013), a Goal of Excellence in Math (GEM) student, is one of the 51 high school students from all public and private schools in the National Capital Region who qualified in the Area Stage of the Philippine Math Olympiad (PMO).  The Area Stage is the second phase of PMO’s series of qualifying exams where the eventual top placers will represent the Philippines in the International Math Olympiad.

Sto. Domingo’s achievement is no mean feat.  The PMO usually draws about 3,500 high school students all over the Philippines to take the first stage of exams called the Qualifying Stage.  Students who hurdle this stage usually come from perennial winners like Philippine Science High School, Ateneo De Manila High School, St. Jude Catholic School, St. Stephen’s High School, Grace Christian College, Chiang Kai Shek College, and others.  It was more than a decade ago when a DLSZ student last qualified in the Area Stage of the PMO.
Sto. Domingo’s achievement and other related successes of the GEM students in various math competitions resulted from the intensive math training program conducted by GEM Teachers Mr. Albert Morris Pagilagan, Mr. Gerald Ferrer, Mr. Mark Xyburt John Rodelas, and Mr. Mark Joseph Mendoza.  The GEM program is headed by Ms. Elizabeth Ortiguero, HS Math Coordinator.
The other members of the DLSZ contingent in the Qualifying Stage of the PMO were Alain Mikael Alafriz (DLSZ 2013), Edgardo Joaquin Sevilla (DLSZ 2013), Nathaniel Ryan Vasay (DLSZ 2013), Alec Lemuel Lim (DLSZ 2014), Joseph Rosh Perez (DLSZ 2014), Veronica Elaine Suarez (DLSZ 2014) and Carlos Benedict Echevarria (DLSZ 2015).
The Area Stage is set on November 17, 2012.
Good luck Paul!  You make us proud!
