Music is not just about playing an instrument. For me, it is a hobby and something that makes me feel happy and comfortable. I learned to play the flute in just one (1) year because I kept practicing and stayed committed to my goal. I was patient and hardworking. But attending my first flute masterclass helped me even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 18, 2025, I attended a flute masterclass led by Ms. Viktoriya Klyukina at the University of Santo Tomas, Conservatory of Music. Ms. Viktoriya, who now plays with the Kunming International Philharmonic Orchestra, was trained in Singapore and at the Tianjin Juilliard School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the masterclass, I noticed that many of the flutists had similar struggles and challenges as I do in trying to reach the next level on their instrument. I learned how to improve my phrasing and when to breathe\u2014because we cannot just breathe anywhere in a piece. Ms. Viktoriya pointed out the specific measures where each flutist should take a breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also learned about proper posture during recitals and concerts. Good posture not only looks pleasing to the audience but also promotes better airflow, which helps produce a good tone. Lastly, I learned about adjusting the air. Some flutists change their airflow by tightening or loosening their embouchure, but Ms. Viktoriya said, \u201cAir doesn\u2019t matter\u2014stay with your comfortable embouchure and do not change it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a wonderful and valuable experience for me. Even though I did not get the chance to perform my individual piece, I still listened closely to Ms. Viktoriya\u2019s advice, tips, and lessons for the other flutists. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to attend this masterclass, which broadened my knowledge and helped me grow as a flute player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
