POW August 22-27, 2011

After incurring two losses in the UAAP Juniors Basketball game, it was time for me to make a slight deviation from my usual official duties to give a motivational talk to the Junior Archers during one of their afternoon practices before the Saturday, August 27 game versus UST. I won’t be sharing exactly what I told the kids but what I want to post in this weekly blog are excerpts from motivational article which inspired me and which I partly shared with the boys during that casual afternoon meeting.

Excerpts from Learn From Losing written by Lem Elway
I don’t like to lose. I don’t even like to write about losing. Losses usually lead to questions and doubts: Should I alter my approach? Set new rules? Change my expectations? How do I keep athletes from getting frustrated? How do I keep them from losing confidence in me?
Staying Positive:
It’s extremely easy to feel negative about your players and yourself when the losses pile up, and you need to fight this every step of the way.
Evaluate Why You’re Losing
Break down every game and figure out what went wrong and what went right. Know what your athletes are doing well and where they need to improve.
Make It A Learning Experience: We’ve all heard the saying, “You can learn more from losing than winning,” but the operative word there is can—this learning doesn’t happen automatically. You need to seize the teachable moments of losing.
Update:
The Junior Archers won its game against UST last Saturday August 27 after a tight first half. Awesome!
