It’s dengue season once again and we would like to advise everyone to take the following necessary self-protection measures to avoid being infected with this disease caused by the dengue virus:
- Female students may wear full-length pants (no skinny or ripped jeans) or long socks (knee length) to school. They may wear it with any DLSZ shirt. (Note: this special arrangement is effective July 8, 2019, until deemed necessary)
- Apply mosquito repellent on exposed parts of the body every day.
Dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever, caused by an Aedes aegypti mosquito bite that is infected with any one of the four dengue viruses, are acute viral infections that affect infants, young children, and adults. According to the Department of Health Advisory, the patient must be brought to the nearest hospital if fever or any of the following symptoms persist for 2 or more days:
- Sudden onset of high fever which may last from 2 to 7 days.
- Joint and muscle pain and pain behind the eyes
- Weakness
- Skin rashes
- Nose bleeding when fever starts to subside
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting of coffee-colored matter
- Dark-colored stools
- Difficulty of breathing
In order to prevent the infestation of the dengue mosquito in the campus, DLSZ’s Facilities and Environmental Program Management Office (FEPMO) has been implementing the following measures:
- Contracting the services of iPower Products & Systems, Inc. to install a Mosquito Terminating System (MTS) that is environmentally safe;
- Contracting the services of a pest control company to conduct fogging and misting every Saturday and Sunday;
- Installation of several units of electric mosquito zappers in strategic areas around the campus;
- Regular cleaning of gutters in all the buildings;
- Disposal of all unusable containers that collect and hold water.
Parents are also advised to disallow their children, who have fever, from going to school and to immediately consult a doctor should they manifest symptoms of dengue infection. As a matter of school policy, a medical certificate should be presented to the school physician before a medical clearance is issued to a student who has been absent for at least 3 days due to illness.
